Programme for the Interaction of Young Pakistani Scholars with Nobel Prize Winners

Second Meeting

2nd Meeting of Nobel Prize Winners with Pakistani Students/ Young Scholars, Islamabad/Lahore

The 2nd Meeting of Nobel Laureates with Pakistani Students/Young Scholars was organized by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) in collaboration with Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Science & Technology and Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS). Dr. N.M. Butt, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation as the Representative in Pakistan, Council for Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings, was the Chief Organizer. This was a five day meeting held from 27-31 March, 2007. First three days of the meeting were organized at Islamabad and the last two days at Lahore.

Purpose of the meeting was to inspire and motivate Pakistani students, young scientists and research scholars for developing scientific culture among students and to broaden the outreach of the country’s scientists. Three Nobel Laureates viz., Prof. Klaus von Klitzing, Prof. Douglas Osheroff and Prof. Peter Courtland Agre participated in this Meeting.

The meeting was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman Higher Education Commission/Federal Minister and Advisor to the Prime Minister on Science & Technology. Other Government officials present on the occasion included Engineer Parvez Butt, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology, Dr. N. M. Butt, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation/ Chairman, National Commission on Nano Science & Technology and Mr. Waqar A. Butt, Deputy Chief Scientist/Secretary Organzing Committee. Two Nobel Laureates viz., Prof. Klaus von Klitzing and Prof. Douglas Osheroff were also present on the occasion. About 400 persons participated in the inaugural session.
Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman, Higher Education Commission/Federal Minister and Adviser to the Prime Minister on S&T while addressing the meeting expressed his gratitude to the Nobel Laureates for their visit to Pakistan and sparing their time for interaction with Pakistani students and young scholars in this meeting. He commended the efforts of Dr. N. M. Butt for bringing these top most scientists of the world to Pakistan. He said that students are the real wealth of the country. Therefore we should invest on our student. Educational development is the real development of country. Development of roads and bridges will not bring real prosperity in the country but it is the better education at all level which will bring real prosperity and development in the country. Human capital is real strength of country therefore human resource development of the country is the most important for the socio economic and technological development of country. Such meeting will motivate our students.

He emphasized that education at all level will only lead to success. 54% of our young generation is below 19 years of age. This young segment of our population is the future of Pakistan, which should be developed through better education. We have a huge pool of creativity. This is our challenge to discover this creative pool. We can overcome this challenge through better education and development in Science & Technology. He informed about the initiatives and programs of Higher Education Commission for development and promotion of higher education in the country. He also supported the idea of holding such meetings for interaction of Pakistani students with Nobel Laureates.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Engineer Parvez Butt, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology, Prof. Klaus von Klitzing, Prof. Douglas Osheroff and Mr. Waqar A. Butt. Dr. N. M. Butt, Chiarman organizing committee described the history of the participation of Pakistani students/young scholars in Annual Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany. He informed that these meetings are aimed at creation of Knowledge through interaction. Since it is not possible to send a large number of students to Germany due to high expenditure, therefore this initiative was taken to hold meetings on the same pattern as in Lindau to benefit a large number of students.

After the inaugural session, the scientific session was started. About 300 scientists, researchers, young scholars and policy makers participated in this scientific session and interacted with Nobel Laureates. Prof. Klaus von Klitzing delivered a lecture on "Metrology: The Science of Measurement". His talk was focused on development of three basic units of measurement.

In the afternoon, an informal meeting of Nobel Laureates with senior scientists of Pakistan was held focusing on development of science culture in the country.

The Nobel Laureates Prof. Douglas Osheroff and Prof. Klaus von Klitzing participated in the "News Morning" programme of PTV World on 28th March, 2007. Prof. Peter Agre participated in a live programme "Morning with Farah" of A.T.V. channel on 29th March, 2007. Prof. Douglas Osheroff and Prof. Klitzing participated in a live programme of Power Radio FM 99, Islamabad while Prof. Peter Agre and Prof. Douglas Osheroff participated in a live radio programme of FM 100, Lahore.

The second day of meeting was meant for interaction of Nobel Laureates with students of intermediate & A. level; Prof. Klaus von Klitzing and Prof. Douglas Osheroff each delivered a 10 minutes talk on "Life in Science" which was followed by direct interaction of young students with Nobel Laureates. After this Prof. Osheroff delivered a lecture on "The Discovery of Superfluidity in Helium-3; My Story" and Prof. Peter Agre delivered lecture on "Aquaporin Water Channels: From Atomic Structure to Clinical Medicine". The participants enthusiastically interacted with Nobel Laureates who shared their knowledge and experience with them. In the afternoon the Nobel Laureates visited the Science & Technology Expo-2007 organized by Pakistan Science Foundation at Shakarparian, Islamabad.

Third day of meeting was for interaction of young student of NSTC/ NPTC, INTEL competition, Physics Olympiad and top students from various colleges. Three Nobel Laureates Prof. Klaus von Klitzing, Prof. Douglas Sheriff and Prof. Peter Agre each respectively delivered 10 minutes talk on " Road to Nobel Prize". Afterwards, young students directly interacted with Nobel Laureates and greatly benefited from their knowledge and experience. After this a scientific movie "Semiconductors" was shown to young scholars, whereas Prof. Peter Agre visited Army Medical College, Rawalpindi for delivering a lecture to medical doctors.

The 4th & 5th day meeting of Nobel Laureates was held at Government College University, Punjab University and University of health Sciences, Lahore. A large number of students, scientists, research scholars, faculty members of Government College University, Lahore, Punjab University, Lahore, University of Health Sciences, Lahore and Other Institutions attended the meeting and interacted with Laureates. Nobel Laureates Prof. Douglas Osheroff delivered very informative lecture on "The Discovery of Superfluidity in Helium-3: My Story", while Prof. Peter Agre delivered lecture on "Aquaporin Water Channels: From Atomic Structure to Clinical Medicine" during the two days meeting at Lahore. Nobel Laureates also visited historical places like Shahi Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Tomb of Allama Iqbal during their stay in Lahore.

The proceeding of this second meeting of Nobel Laureates with Pakistani students and young scholars received good coverage in print media as well as electronic media.
