Introduction

Sports  

Sports provide infinite opportunities for rising human abilities, both physical and mental. Through sports one learns to acquire loads of valuable skills vital for overall development of a human body. Thus Sports may be painstaking as one of the greatest feature for developing one’s personality. Thus developed nations around the planet accord top priority to sports in their national development programs.
A student necessitates recreational means to unwind from academic rigours. The sporting activities thus provide such cathartic opportunities that revive the physical and mental energies of a student. These activities not only inculcate empathy among the students but also erect their character. Sports and Physical Education is thus generally regarded as integral part of General Education.
  

Pakistan University Sports Board 

Higher Education Commission (HEC) amongst various other areas of Higher Education in Pakistan also deals with the Sports matters of Degree level students (Male & Female) of the Universities and Institutes of Higher Learning of the country. It organizes/sponsors sports activities from Intervarsity to national levels in close collaboration with the Universities of Pakistan and sports federations. HEC has a Board namely Pakistan Universities Sports Board (PUSB), which consists of Vice Chancellors of all the Universities and Degree Awarding Institutions of Pakistan. Board is a supervisory body on University Sports in Pakistan.

Standing Sub Committee 

There is a Standing Sub-Committee of PUSB which consists of the Directors of Sports/Physical Education Universities/Institutes of Pakistan, headed by D.G Sports HEC as its Convener It works as a technical committee of PUSB. Its meeting is held every year in the month of August to September to finalize the schedule of annual sports activities including Intervarsity Championships as well as other points pertaining to University Sports.  

Mission Statement 

To provide opportunities to student players (Male & Female) for development of human abilities both Physical & Mental through participation in sports activities maintaining transparency & standards in university sports. 

 

Objectives
  • To encourage, promote and develop the Games and Sports in the Universities of Pakistan
  • To plan and execute various sports activities in order to provide opportunities for social contact and understanding amongst the students of the Universities of Pakistan.
  • To organize Inter University Sports Championships for male & female student players and awaken the interest towards Sports.
  • To get affiliation with the National and International Sports Federations/ Organizations.
  • To arrange Coaching Training Camps and Courses for the benefit of Pakistan University/HEC Teams/ student players and sports officials.
  • To select Pakistan University/HEC teams for participation in National and International level matches/ meets both at home and abroad.
  • To award medals, trophies, certificates prize money and sports scholarships etc as per PUSB rules to the student sportsmen/sports women and sports officials showing outstanding merit and performance.
  • To act as a bureau of information on sports consultation amongst the Institutions of higher learning and Government Departments related to Sports.
  • To act as a representative of the Universities/Institutes of Pakistan.
  • To appoint or recommend where necessary a representative of PUSB/HEC at any Conference/ Competition / Function at National or International level.
  • To organize and facilitate Conferences, Courses, Seminars, Workshops, Lectures and Research Work etc in Sports.
Intervarsity

Organization/Coordination of Intervarsity Sports Championships is one of the foremost functions of Sports Division which is accomplished in close collaboration with the Universities of Pakistan. Intervarsity competitions are organized with an eventual endeavor to provide openings for social contact and understanding amongst the student players (Men & women) of the universities of Pakistan. The derived objective of such competitions at this echelon is to magnetize the student’s community towards sports & other healthy activities as sports polish the physical and mental aptitudes of individuals.All the 132 universities (Public & Private) recognized by HEC have equal right to participate in Intervarsity sports championships which are organized every year from October to June (9 Months). The competitions are organized in 38 sports including 10 women disciplines at about 100 venues of the Universities of Pakistan. The University teams’ more than in four figures participate in these competitions. The University teams do partake in these events on their own arrangements and expenditures, however HEC releases funds to the host university to meet the organizational expenditures of these competitions. Trophies, Certificates and cash prizes, are awarded to the position holder teams/players by HEC.

Since the inception of Higher Education Commission, participation of universities teams in Intervarsity Sports Championships has increased many-folds. Besides this, number of sports events being organized at this level has also gone up.  The overall participation of universities and performance of student players (Men & Women) at this level has also increased considerably.

National & International Participation

National  

As per national sports set up, PUSB/HEC is affiliated with various National /International Sports bodies including Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) and Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). These National Sports bodies are responsible for the promotion of sports in the country through their all affiliated units including PUSB/HEC. Beside other activities these national sports federations also organize National level competitions in their respective sports and all affiliated units including HEC/ PUSB participate in these competitions.  Pakistan Universities / HEC teams / players are selected during Intervarsity Championships or through open selection trials which after attending training camps participate in these championships.  Pakistan National Games are held after every 02 years under the aegis of Pakistan Olympic Association. Pakistan Universities/HEC teams also participate in these games being HEC, an affiliated unit of POA.

International 

Similar to National, PUSB/HEC is also affiliated with various International Sports Bodies. PUSB/HEC also enter Pakistan universities teams in the sports competitions held under the auspices of these International sports federations. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Universities teams/players have been participating in the “Universiade” World University Games which are held after every two years at various venues of the world under the aegis of FISU (International University Sports Federation) A university student Boxer had won a Bronze Medal in the 1st World University Boxing Championship held in 2004-05 in Turkey. With the passage of time participation of Pakistan Universities teams (Men & Women) has also Increased at International level.

PC-1

A PC-I Scheme Titled “Improvement of Sports in the Universities of Pakistan” was prepared and approved in 2004 for total value of Rs.27.125 million for the development and improvement of Sports activities and physical facilities in the Universities of Pakistan. The scheme has the following 04 segments:

 i.                    Development/improvement of Sports physical facilities in the Universities

ii.                    Organization of Sports Galas at Provincial leve

iii.                   Provision of Fitness Center to the Universities

iv.                   Provision of Coaches to the Universities in different disciplines of Sports 

 

 i.        Development/Improvement of Sports Physical Facilities in the Universities

          Funds have been provided to the following 08 universities of the country to develop/improve their sports physical facilities i.e. play fields/courts in a short period of time ultimately to enable them to prepare their teams/players to participate Intervarsity level. The funds were provided for the purpose as mentioned against each so that they will be able to compete at National level. Following university was given the physical facilities.

   ii.       Fitness Centers to the Universities        

          Provision of funds has been provided to 25 universities of the country to establish Fitness Centers at their campuses for use by the students/staff community, so that the students can get a chance to keep them fit and healthy. iii.      Provision of Coaches to the Universities 

The services of Sports Coaches provided to various universities of the country to look after their training programs of their student players and sports officials, so that they can compete with Sports world outside. So far 46 coaches have been deputed to various universities, which lead to good results in various sports. The list of coaches presently working is given as under:-
