Merit Scholarship Scheme for PhD Studies in Science & Technology (200 Scholarships)

| Introduction |
The primary objective of the project is to build a pool of specialized scientists and highly skilled professionals trained at PhD level in areas of national significance which would have impact on the economy of the country. These specialists shall be readily available to be drawn upon for any challenging development project as well as application of Science and Technology in environment etc. contributing to accelerate the growth of the economy.
The specific objectives of the project are:
- To utilize full potentials of the various Departments/ Institutes of universities and Centre of Excellence having sufficient infrastructure for higher level teaching and research in new & emerging scientific fields.
- To augment PhD program in universities & higher education institutions in Pakistan.
- To improve academic qualifications of 200 fresh and in-service scholars for utilizing their talent fully in universities, colleges, centre of excellence and R&D bodies.

| Eligibility Criteria |
This Scholarship Scheme is open to all types of applicants including Public/Private sector and unemployed applicants.
- The candidate should have 1st Division through out his/her academic career.
- The candidate should have valid admission at least six months before the closing date of advertisement (18.12.2004) in PhD or M.Phil leading to PhD program and officially working with HEC/PCST approved supervisor.
- The candidate should have been enrolled in any accredited University, Institute and Center of excellence which is stated in the list of universities.
- The candidate should not be more than 40 years of age by the closing date of application i.e. 18.12.2004.
- The candidate should not be holding any other scholarship from any other Govt. source.
- The candidate should be on study leave for the entire period of his/her PhD studies in case of him/her being a public sector employee.

Rs. 5,000/- per scholar in the last year |

Remuneration to Supervisor |
Rs. 5,000/- (1st installment on defense of Research proposals |

Remuneration to Foreign Evaluator of the thesis / dissertation |
Rs. 18,000/- (US $ 300/- once) |

Note: The scholarship is payable for four years or maximum of eight six monthly installments.

| Terms & Conditions |
- The scholarship will be tenable only for the subject approved by National Scholarship Management Committee (NSMC) Higher Education Commission, Islamabad.
- The scholar will not change the course of study specified in the letter of award without obtaining prior approval of the Chairman, NSMC (HEC).
- The scholar is not to hold any other scholarship/stipend during this scholarship period of his/her study.
- Change of university/institute during the study will only be admissible, if technically justified, with prior approval of the Chairman, NSMC, who would report the matter to the NSMC (HEC) in its next meeting.
- In case the awardee fails to complete his/her study, he/she will have to refund to the Government of Pakistan (GoP) the total amount spent on his/her studies by the GoP.
- Applicants would be required to execute a bond with the Government of Pakistan to serve the GoP for at least five years in a public sector university/organization.
- The serving teachers/researchers or others would obtain study leave from their employers.
