PhD Review Committees
Increased programs of higher education and prevalence of different procedures and practices for awarding degrees in the universities have created uncertainty in maintenance of quality along with a plethora of related problems. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the Quality Assurance Committee of HEC defined minimum criteria for award of MPhil /PhD degrees. The universities were requested to implement them with the consent of their statutory bodies thereby creating a uniform mechanism for ensuring quality in standards of teaching and research in the universities of Pakistan. These criteria are being applicable in the universities since May 2005.
The Competent Authority constituted a PhD Review Committee comprising of eminent educationists to determine the implementation status of the laid down criteria. It was decided that assessment of MPhil/ PhD programs on a regular basis be continued in order to ensure the quality of programs. 3rd round of review has been initiated. For this purpose base line data collection and review visits of universities are being undertaken. In order to accelerate the review process, four review committees are functioning. These have been mandated by the Competent Authority HEC to conduct review of higher degree programs of both public and private sector universities in the regions of (1) KPK & Balochistan, (2)Islamabad and Azad Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit (3) Punjab and (4) Sindh.
