Thematic Research Grants ProgramThematic Research Grants Program<div style="text-align:justify;"><p style="text-align:justify;">Higher education sector of Pakistan has been playing an important role in improving the quality of teaching and developing research culture through innovative ways. Realizing the need of ensuring the concept of knowledge economy in true sense it initiated different incentivized programs in both the public and private sector universities/institutions to motivate and encourage the potential researchers in almost all disciplines. However, besides its focus on promoting research culture in sciences it also concentrated on promoting research culture in social sciences. It, hence, intends to encourage the creative and talented faculty members to probe into those areas (see the different thematic areas in attachment) that check the growth, development and progress of Pakistan. Such encouragement not only helps in addressing the key issues paralyzing the status of Pakistan but also unearthing those possible case studies and details which can be translated into national policies and goals achievements. Furthermore, thematic research program in social sciences aims to discourage the on-going brain drain and utilizing the innovative thinking of researchers. The following are the SOPs of the Thematic Grants Program [TRGP- 2016-17] </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Objectives:</strong> </p><p style="text-align:justify;">TGRP 2016-17 intends to: </p><p style="text-align:justify;">a) Address all such issues that discourage the pace of Pakistan in encountering the developed world; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">b) Identify all those possible avenues which can ensure the concept of innovation and commercialization of research output; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">c) Showcase material and other details or, in other words, profile of Pakistan vis-à-vis other countries, if required, for understanding of the readers, academics, policy makers as well as for developing holistic development strategies; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">d) Encourage diversity based researches to help develop grounded and feasible understanding of the issues through diverse lenses.   </p><p style="text-align:justify;">e) Ensure continuity, implementation, and institutionalization of previous research done under Thematic Research Grant Program. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">f) Converting the earlier research into policies, programs, interventions, electronic and training materials, degree programs, diploma courses, and publications, for wider dissemination and application.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><br></strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Research Themes:</strong> </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-1:  Pakistan: The Land and People. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-2: Constitution, Government and Politics. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-3:  The Internal and External Challenges and Opportunities. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-4:  State, Society and Culture. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-5:  The New Role and Emerging Status of Pakistan. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-6:  Education and Development.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-7:  Communication and Traditional/Main Stream and New Media. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-8:  Literature and Language / Linguistics. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-9: National Harmony and integration. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-10: General/ Miscellaneous.   </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><br></strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Amount and Budget Estimates:</strong>  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Maximum funding would be up to Rs.10.0 million for each research project. The proposed budget will be submitted on a separate sheet in the approved format provided along with the Application Form. If more than one institute is involved, the budget must clearly state the cash/kind inputs by and expenses for each institute in respect of all cost-heads.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">PI shall provide budget details along with justifications for each budget head as prescribed in the Application Form. The contingencies shall not exceed 10% of the total project budget. HEC Research Travel GrantHEC Research Travel Grant<font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </font><p style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;text-align:justify;line-height:120%;"><span style="line-height:120%;font-family:"cambria",serif;font-size:12pt;"><font color="#000000"></font></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;">Scientific seminars, conferences and symposia act as a welcome source of motivation and information for the academic and scientific communities. These events provide tremendous opportunity to exchange the scientific outcomes of knowledge creation and problem solving. Scientific conferences are ideal places to find out what's advanced in specific field, observe the various debates and controversies under way, meet interesting people, make contacts for the future, and, in general, interact with professionals in their fields. Beyond knowing inspiring stories, the participants see how others solved problems similar, which may help move them past the roadblock in their own research. The contacts developed in these events may result in a new collaboration.  It's always amusing to put the names one has read on papers for years with actual faces at scientific conferences.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Higher Education Commission's Travel Grant Program aims at providing the opportunity to the academic and scientific communities to boost their research activities in the public and private sector universities and degree awarding institutes of Pakistan. Under this program, faculty and Ph.D. scholars are extended financial assistance for presentation of their research papers at national or international forums, which facilitates the interaction with skilled academia and researchers in the relevant field. Start-Up Research Grant ProgramStart-Up Research Grant Program<p style="text-align:justify;">Start-Up Research Grant Program (SRGP) is designed to assist the fresh PhD holders to establish research facilities upon joining higher education institutions as faculty members. The program enables the newly appointed PhD faculty to setup basic research infrastructure to start research activities without delay. The program helps to engage both the faculty and students in research through provision of financial assistance and basic lab/experimental facilities. </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Important: </strong></p><ul style="text-align:justify;"><li>New Policy has been implemented from 1st December 2015. HEC Outstanding Research AwardsHEC Outstanding Research Awards<p style="text-align:justify;">The HEC Outstanding Research Awards program aims to recognize and reward the achievements of Pakistani researchers/scholars for research, innovation and publication in all fields of study. Master Trainers Faculty Development ProgramMaster Trainers Faculty Development Program<p><strong>There are two Master Trainer Faculty Development Programs:</strong></p><ol><li>Master Trainer Faculty Professional Development Program</li><li>Training Effectiveness Program for MT-FPDP Alumni at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand</li></ol><p><strong></strong> </p><p><strong>MASTER TRAINERS-FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:</strong></p><p>This program is up to 8 weeks long and is a fully sponsored national in-service residential Master Trainer's professional teaching certificate program. It is held at LID Islamabad and is designed for Higher Education teaching faculty to develop their research and professional skills.</p><p> </p><p>Twenty-one such batches of MT-FPDP have been organized so far by the Learning Innovation Division. Faculty members of different public and HEC-funded private sector universities received professional certification for teaching, research, and management skills. Master Trainers lead a similar training in their respective institutions. </p><p> </p><p>To date, 783 HEI faculty members have received this training and are serving as Master Trainers in their respective institutions. The 28<sup>th </sup>Batch will be inaugurated in the month of July 2016.</p><p> </p><p><strong>TRAINING EFFECTIVENESS PROGRAM FOR MT-FPDP ALUMNI AT THE ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, THAILAND:</strong></p><p>This is an exclusive three-week international program meant as a follow-up training for the best performing alumni of the Master Trainer Faculty Professional Development Program (MT-FPDP). The program aims to further expose them to international academic practices and research, and to build their capacity to run the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Centers at their universities.</p><p> </p><p>This training program is conducted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. PERIDOT Research ProgramPERIDOT Research Program<p>​​​​</p><p style="text-align:justify;">PERIDOT is the Franco-Pakistani Hubert Curien Partnership (PHC) Program providing opportunities to Pakistani and French researchers to interact for joint research activities. The program is implemented in Pakistan by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and in France, jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (MAEDI) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR). Hiring of Foreign FacultyHiring of Foreign Faculty<p style="text-align:justify;">The HEC has developed a number of faculty hiring programmes focused to ease the critical shortage of qualified faculty in the public sector institutions of higher education. These programmes will also help increase the number of skilled and experienced teachers to teach at institutions that will produce fine engineers and scientists across a broad range of disciplines.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Through the Faculty Hiring Programme, the HEC aspires to bring a positive change in the culture of higher education institutions in all domains of academic activities including development of infrastructure; academic standards; curriculum; knowledge dissemination through refined teaching/examination/grading methodologies; industry-academia linkage; international collaborative research and fine supervisory acumen which results in creation of knowledge. There has been considerable progress in the targeted areas due to these faculty hiring programmes.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The programme will develop links between local and foreign institutions, encouraging long-term sustainable scientific collaborations. The Modern University Governance Program for University ManagementThe Modern University Governance Program for University Management<p style="text-align:justify;">The Modern University Governance Program for University Management (MUG) aims to equip university management with the latest governance tools, and to bridge the gap between management and academia.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The first activity was held for the top management of the universities when LID and AIT Bangkok jointly conducted the first-ever two-week workshop on Good Governance for 21st Century from 22nd May –June 01, 2007. The workshop focused on good governance models and holistic strategic management principles, and was attended by 12 university VCs and two senior registrars. The workshop also included visits and meetings at leading Thai universities and technology parks, and related research organizations. During the visit, further MOUs were signed between individual universities and VCs of Pakistan.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Following the success of the program, the HEC decided with the support of all heads of HEIs to start a regular in-service program titled Modern University Governance Program for University Management (MUG) for all tiers of university management.  Since then, LID has been implementing activities at regular intervals according to the following framework:</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Main activities of MUG program are:</p><ol><li>Orientation Leadership Training Program for Newly Inducted Vice Chancellor HEIs of Pakistan</li><li>Leadership Training Program for Newly Inducted Vice Chancellor HEIs of Pakistan</li><li>Leadership Training Program for Senior Management HEIs of Pakistan</li><li>Strategic Management Workshops for Senior Management HEIs of Pakistan<span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span><br><br> </li></ol><p style="text-align:justify;">The staff trainings are designed to equip university management with an understanding of generic and specified areas such as:</p><ul><li>Good governance models, tools and techniques</li><li>Principles of management</li><li>Leadership and management</li><li>Strategic management and policy planning, implementation and evaluation</li><li>Public policy</li><li>Monitoring and evaluation</li><li>Principals of audit and accounting</li><li>Financial management</li><li>Project management </li><li>PMBOK international modules</li><li>Ethics and corporate /social responsibility etc</li><li>Professional communication</li><li>Media advocacy</li><li>Proficiency in English for professional settings</li><li>Effective use of ICT in professional environment</li><li>Emotional intelligence (EQ vs IQ)</li><li>Time and stress management</li><li>Problem solving and decision making</li><li>Result based management</li></ul><p style="text-align:justify;">​​​How can universities conduct the program?</p><p style="text-align:justify;">This program is ideal for university management as well as faculty members who are working on management-related tasks by their respective universities. To enrich the learning process, LID arranges skilled resource persons, who share their experience and knowledge gathered from the latest academic content and research. Our program also provides excellent networking opportunities with faculty members from all over the country. We also introduced a video conferencing facility to our program if required for national and international dialogues and seminars.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The MUG Program is conducted both by HEC as well as sponsored by LID to be arranged at the doorsteps of universities.
