The Modern University Governance Program for University ManagementThe Modern University Governance Program for University Management<p style="text-align:justify;">The Modern University Governance Program for University Management (MUG) aims to equip university management with the latest governance tools, and to bridge the gap between management and academia.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The first activity was held for the top management of the universities when LID and AIT Bangkok jointly conducted the first-ever two-week workshop on Good Governance for 21st Century from 22nd May –June 01, 2007. The workshop focused on good governance models and holistic strategic management principles, and was attended by 12 university VCs and two senior registrars. The workshop also included visits and meetings at leading Thai universities and technology parks, and related research organizations. To enrich the learning process, LID arranges skilled resource persons, who share their experience and knowledge gathered from the latest academic content and research. Our program also provides excellent networking opportunities with faculty members from all over the country. We also introduced a video conferencing facility to our program if required for national and international dialogues and seminars.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The MUG Program is conducted both by HEC as well as sponsored by LID to be arranged at the doorsteps of universities. English Language Teaching Reforms ProjectEnglish Language Teaching Reforms Project<p>​</p><p style="text-align:justify;">In order to bring qualitative improvement in English Language Teaching and Learning Higher Education Commission in 2004 launched first ever exclusive language based project titled as English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR). This project aims at building the capacity of English Language Teachers in higher education sector in Pakistan for effective and sustainable development. The project is the part of overall vision of prospective plan 2020 and pertains to human resource development in English Language Teaching and research in Higher Education. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">After successful phase I which catered <strong>1398 </strong>teachers of colleges and universities, the ELTR launched its Phase II in 2010. HEC Distinguished National ProfessorsHEC Distinguished National Professors<p style="text-align:justify;">The Higher Education Commission has launched an "HEC Distinguished National Professors"   program to use the services of outstanding senior Professors and Scientists in Universities and R&D Organizations and utilize their services in national organizations.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The selected HEC National Professor shall be engaged in teaching and research in public sector institutions. The HEC distinguished National Professor will be entitled to fixed emoluments salary of Rs.150,000/- per month @ Rs. 100000/- (for personal expense) and Rs. 50,000/- (Research grant/Institutional share). Continuous Professional Development ProgramContinuous Professional Development Program<p style="text-align:justify;">The Continuous Professional Development Program (CPD) conducts various capacity building and refresher courses for the teaching faculty of Higher Education Institutions across Pakistan. These workshops aim to provide the background and skills necessary for faculty members to participate positively in academic activities of the universities. University Industry Technological Support ProgramUniversity Industry Technological Support Program<p style="text-align:justify;">The University Industry Technology Support Program (UITSP) of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) is an important step towards fostering a high-level of tangible cooperation between academia and industry. This cooperation is to capitalize on emerging international demands for products and processes in discrete and continuous manufacturing that shall contribute to the national economy. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">This program is focused on the industrial sectors where the country is already a major contributor to world trade. It focuses on harnessing the potential of highly competitive sectors for international trade which needs development both for local and international consumption. The focused sector wise identification of products and processes in discrete and continuous, as well as import and export, trends is available from the public domain local and international statistical data.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The UITSP proposes that researchers, preferably with PhD degrees and affiliation with international professional bodies, collaborate with the local industry involved in discrete and continuous manufacturing for tangible results in terms of improvement of product and processes leading to decreased import of raw material and increased export of the finished product and processes. The products and processes needing improvement should ideally be in priority areas relevant to national needs for socio-economic development of the country.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The UITSP is awarded on competitive merit by the HEC for high-level and promising industrial research projects of direct relevance to current needs of the industry to be carried out in Pakistan by creative scientists of public-sector universities and degree-awarding institutions in collaboration with professionals from the local industry. The purpose of these grants is to promote scientific research in applied sciences in the country and to strengthen the indigenous capacity for industrial competition in the world market.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">The research grant will be provided for a maximum period of two years with a budget of up to Rs. 6 million.</p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Objectives</strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;">The increased globalization of trade, formulation of policies and procedures to streamline the globalization trend and application of international standards by national, international and professional organizations has increased the trade competitiveness and thus has opened new avenues for worldwide industrial sector. To avail these new opportunities, the local industry and the universities at home shall be competitive and compliant with the international standards. The result of this collaboration exercise between industry and academia should be tangible and should reflect in the Gross National Product of the country. Generally, applied sciences section of the academia and discrete and continuous manufacturing sector of the industry needs high level of cooperation to improve products and processes in order to compete worldwide. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">UITSP of the Higher Education Commission is an important step towards fostering high level of tangible cooperation between academia and industry. Thematic Research Grants ProgramThematic Research Grants Program<div style="text-align:justify;"><p style="text-align:justify;">Higher education sector of Pakistan has been playing an important role in improving the quality of teaching and developing research culture through innovative ways. Realizing the need of ensuring the concept of knowledge economy in true sense it initiated different incentivized programs in both the public and private sector universities/institutions to motivate and encourage the potential researchers in almost all disciplines. However, besides its focus on promoting research culture in sciences it also concentrated on promoting research culture in social sciences. It, hence, intends to encourage the creative and talented faculty members to probe into those areas (see the different thematic areas in attachment) that check the growth, development and progress of Pakistan. Such encouragement not only helps in addressing the key issues paralyzing the status of Pakistan but also unearthing those possible case studies and details which can be translated into national policies and goals achievements. Furthermore, thematic research program in social sciences aims to discourage the on-going brain drain and utilizing the innovative thinking of researchers. The following are the SOPs of the Thematic Grants Program [TRGP- 2017-18] </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Objectives:</strong> </p><p style="text-align:justify;">TGRP 2017-18 intends to: </p><p style="text-align:justify;">a) Address all such issues that discourage the pace of Pakistan in encountering the developed world; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">b) Identify all those possible avenues which can ensure the concept of innovation and commercialization of research output; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">c) Showcase material and other details or, in other words, profile of Pakistan vis-à-vis other countries, if required, for understanding of the readers, academics, policy makers as well as for developing holistic development strategies; </p><p style="text-align:justify;">d) Encourage diversity based researches to help develop grounded and feasible understanding of the issues through diverse lenses.   </p><p style="text-align:justify;">e) Ensure continuity, implementation, and institutionalization of previous research done under Thematic Research Grant Program. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">f) Converting the earlier research into policies, programs, interventions, electronic and training materials, degree programs, diploma courses, and publications, for wider dissemination and application.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><br></strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Research Themes:</strong> </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-1:  Economy and National/ Sustainable Development Goals. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-2:  Social Sciences, Arts, Humanities and National Development. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-3:  The New Dynamics of National and International Affairs. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-4:  State and Society of Pakistan: the Way Forward. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Theme-5:  Higher Education in Pakistan: Issues, Challenges and the Way Forward. </p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><br></strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Amount and Budget Estimates:</strong>  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">Maximum funding would be up to Rs.10.0 million for each research project. The proposed budget will be submitted on a separate sheet in the approved format provided along with the Application Form. If more than one institute is involved, the budget must clearly state the cash/kind inputs by and expenses for each institute in respect of all cost-heads.  </p><p style="text-align:justify;">PI shall provide budget details along with justifications for each budget head as prescribed in the Application Form. The contingencies shall not exceed 10% of the total project budget. Master Trainers Faculty Development ProgramMaster Trainers Faculty Development Program<p><strong>There are two Master Trainer Faculty Development Programs:</strong></p><ol><li>Master Trainer Faculty Professional Development Program</li><li>Training Effectiveness Program for MT-FPDP Alumni at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand</li></ol><p><strong></strong> </p><p><strong>MASTER TRAINERS-FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:</strong></p><p>This program is up to 8 weeks long and is a fully sponsored national in-service residential Master Trainer's professional teaching certificate program. It is held at LID Islamabad and is designed for Higher Education teaching faculty to develop their research and professional skills.</p><p> </p><p>Twenty-one such batches of MT-FPDP have been organized so far by the Learning Innovation Division. Faculty members of different public and HEC-funded private sector universities received professional certification for teaching, research, and management skills. Master Trainers lead a similar training in their respective institutions. </p><p> </p><p>To date, 783 HEI faculty members have received this training and are serving as Master Trainers in their respective institutions. The 28<sup>th </sup>Batch will be inaugurated in the month of July 2016.</p><p> </p><p><strong>TRAINING EFFECTIVENESS PROGRAM FOR MT-FPDP ALUMNI AT THE ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, THAILAND:</strong></p><p>This is an exclusive three-week international program meant as a follow-up training for the best performing alumni of the Master Trainer Faculty Professional Development Program (MT-FPDP). The program aims to further expose them to international academic practices and research, and to build their capacity to run the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Centers at their universities.</p><p> </p><p>This training program is conducted at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand.
