The University of Gujrat (UoG) is one of the leading public sector universities in Punjab. It was established by Government of Punjab in 2004 to cater for the higher education needs of the population of central Punjab which includes the districts of Gujrat, Sialkot and Gujranwala − popularly known as the Export Triangle of Pakistan due to various manufacturing industries operating in the area. The university is promoting a culture of research and development in the area.
The main campus of the UoG has been named after a Mughal-era local Sufi saint Hafiz Muhammad Hayat. Renowned architects have designed its purpose-built classrooms, a digital library, conference halls, multi-story buildings for various departments of science and technology, social sciences, humanities, arts, crafts and product design, engineering, information technology and management. Laboratories, video-conferencing facility, horticulturally designed lush green lawns, separate hostels for boys and girls, playgrounds and residences for teachers and other staff members are some of the major components of its infrastructure.
The University of Gujrat (UoG) has become one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning among public sector universities of Pakistan, securing a prominent place in the field of modern knowledge. The university provides a fantastic student experience. It offers degree programmes in 37 different disciplines. A law college, the Institute of Hotel and Restaurant Management and Nawaz Sharif Medical College are already functioning on its premises.
The university has a well-developed organizational structure and a number of sub-campuses in Lahore, Sialkot, Rawalpindi and Narowal, with state-of-the-art facilities, competent faculty members including over 100 PhDs, and highly trained administrative staff. The university started its teaching programmes in 2006 and within the short span of 10 years it has currently over 20,000 students in its Hafiz Hayat Campus (Main Campus) and thousands more in constituent colleges (City Campuses).
The mission of this university is to train the youth in the areas of economy, modern sciences, information technology, social policy and research, enabling them to compete at international level in all disciplines; and develop a world class center of excellence to help industry and society at large through research-based activities.
Strategically located within the industrial triangle of Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot, the UoG's mandate is to bridge HR and technological gap. The UoG has a strong curriculum, in all fields of study it is offering, which is delivered by highly qualified faculty. UoG faculty and students are intensely involved in the research work and participate in various national and international forums and conferences. The multi-disciplinary work of UoG researchers and their collaborators has been published in a variety of journals and conference proceedings.
The university is spread over 268 acres of land, and has an artistically designed purpose-built campus with modern classrooms and laboratories, a state-of-the-art digital library, conference halls and multi-storied buildings for different departments, faculties and schools. Befitting a modern university, the UoG is emerging as one of the leading academic and research hubs in the country. It has established an FM Radio Station and a daily newspaper and TV channel are in the offing. It has also been equipped with a Heidelberg Print Master PM74, Wood Workshop, Weather Observatory, Nanotechnology Labs, Day Care Center and multi-purpose halls. An Auditorium has also become functional at the newly-built Quaid-e-Azam Library. A modern Data Centre to meet the demands of new technology and to facilitate and centralize all the administrative and academic departments of the varsity was opened earlier in 2016.
