Introduction

National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) is the national hub for the capacity building and continuous professional development of teaching faculty and management of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of Pakistan.

The Regional English Language Office (RELO) supports public diplomacy outreach through professional development and English language learning opportunities for English language teachers and learners throughout Pakistan. The Regional English Language Office (RELO) at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), has provided impactful professional development opportunities to English language teachers across Pakistan through its English Language Specialist Program.

​Background:

RELO and HEC/NAHE have a long history of partnership focused on strengthening English language teaching and wider professional development in Pakistan Higher Education sector. This collaboration brings international expertise, modern pedagogy, and cultural exchange into faculty training programs—strengthening Pakistan's higher education capacity and aligning with both national academic goals and U.S. public diplomacy objectives. This joint collaboration has continued since the establishment of the Learning Innovation Division (LID) and after that the conversion the National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) in 2019, and has since been contributing to the professional development of English teachers across Pakistan.

​Objectives:

The key objectives of the NAHE–RELO collaboration are to:

  1. Enhance English Language Teaching Quality
    Strengthen the pedagogical skills and subject expertise of English language teachers in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through exposure to modern, research-informed, and learner-centered teaching methodologies.
  2. Build Institutional Capacity
    Support HEIs in developing sustainable professional development frameworks by equipping faculty with innovative teaching practices, curriculum design strategies, and assessment techniques.
  3. Integrate International Best Practices
    Introduce global standards, contemporary trends, and international perspectives in English language education through collaboration with U.S.-based English Language Specialists.
  4. Strengthen Academic Leadership and Collaboration
    Foster collaboration among faculty, academic leaders, and institutions nationwide to create professional learning communities focused on quality enhancement in English language teaching.
  5. Advance Public Diplomacy and Cultural Exchange
    Promote mutual understanding, academic exchange, and people-to-people connections between Pakistan and the United States through collaborative educational initiatives.
