International Mobility

Student Mobility:

The PAK-UK Education Gateway Mobility Partnership for Students was managed in partnership by British Council Pakistan and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan under Pakistan UK Education Gateway project. The project provided flexible grants to UK higher education providers and Pakistani universities to design and deliver academically rigorous short-term mobility opportunities in Pakistan and the UK for students from their respective institutions.

The Mobility Partnerships had the following objectives.

  • Increase the levels of outward mobility of students from the UK and Pakistan.
  • Enhance the employability of UK and Pakistani graduates, recognising the positive correlation between international experience, academic performance, and graduate employability.
  • Support the internationalisation of higher education institutions in UK and Pakistan through the diversification of the academic body, and through establishing links with the potential to seed deeper institutional partnerships and academic & research collaboration

The PAK-UK Education Gateway Mobility Partnership for Students was advertised in December 2022. The British Council and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan invited proposals from UK and Pakistani universities for this partnership. Partnership proposals of the following universities were approved by an expert panel:

SNPakistani UniversityUK University
1.National University of Science and Technology (NUST), IslamabadCoventry University
2.University of Central Punjab (UCP), LahoreThe University of Central Lancashire
3.Sukkur IBA University, SukkarUniversity of Sussex
4.Lahore College for Women University, LahoreUniversity of Bolton

The above proposals have facilitated exchange of 43 MPhil/PhD students (19 UK & 24 Pakistani), 5 university staff members (2 from UK and 3 from Pakistan) along with 4 HEC officials. The four inwards VISITS (UK students' visit to Pakistan) and 4 outwards visits (Pakistani students' visit to UK) were concluded between August 2023 to March 2024.

The Student Mobility Grants had a significantly positive impact. The beneficiaries gained international exposure and enhanced their capacity for academic research. The grants encouraged institutional partnerships and student placements. They promoted cross-cultural understanding and bolstered identification of areas of mutual interest for developing future collaborations.

The feedback from the participants has been positive, indicating that the project was a success. It boosted the global engagement for Pakistani universities and provided valuable opportunities for collaboration to the UK counterparts. The challenges in the delivery and execution of the project were managed through close coordination between HEC and British Council and have equipped the teams with valuable insights that can be used to inform the future iterations of international mobility projects.
